Executive Branch and Treasury Advance Stablecoin and Fintech Rules
The US Treasury Department has opened public comment on proposed rules implementing the GENIUS Act, a stablecoin bill signed into law last year scheduled to take effect in January 2027. The Treasury's move to seek stakeholder input suggests the agency is working to finalize core definitions and jurisdictional frameworks before the statutory deadline, though the final ruleset may not be ready by implementation date.
The Treasury has also proposed new rules defining eligibility requirements for entities selling stablecoins to US customers, with compliance obligations beginning in 2027. The restrictions on exchanges and crypto platforms mark a shift toward more direct federal oversight of stablecoin issuance and distribution.
