Charges and Legal Escalation
Russian law enforcement has filed terrorism-related charges against Pavel Durov, according to multiple reports citing the country's Federal Security Service (FSB). The charges represent a significant escalation in Russia's legal battle with Telegram and its founder, moving beyond previous regulatory fines to criminal prosecution that could result in life imprisonment, according to CoinDesk.
This marks an intensification of Russia's multi-pronged approach to pressuring Telegram. Earlier in 2026, Russian authorities had already imposed over 100 million rubles in fines against the messaging platform, according to CoinDesk's reporting. The new charges suggest authorities are pursuing a more aggressive legal strategy against Durov personally.
Durov's Stance and International Dimension
Durov has previously characterized Russia's legal actions against him as politically motivated, calling the case "a sad spectacle of a state afraid of its own people," according to Decrypt. The telegram founder's situation extends beyond Russia, with an international arrest warrant now issued, according to Cointelegraph's reporting of FSB statements.
The case adds complexity to Durov's existing legal challenges. A separate investigation in France remains ongoing, according to Cointelegraph, meaning the Telegram founder now faces legal pressure from multiple countries. The combination of Russian criminal charges and international warrants significantly complicates Durov's legal position and the platform's operational status.
