Market Contraction and Sentiment Reversal
Total crypto market capitalization fell 1.21% to $2.636 trillion from $2.668 trillion over the 48-hour window. Daily trading volume also declined, dropping from $78.5B to $74.7B, reflecting reduced momentum. The Fear & Greed Index declined 4 points to 65 ('Greed'), after holding steady at 69 for a full day before a 6-point drop to 63 by September 2 at 5:00 UTC. This modest pullback suggests participants remain broadly optimistic but with emerging caution.
The decline appears distributed rather than concentrated. Bitcoin dominance barely shifted, moving from 59.20% to 59.09%—a 11 basis point compression. Ethereum dominance similarly flatlined, easing just 5 basis points from 11.16% to 11.11%. The stability in layer-1 concentration despite falling total cap indicates that losses were proportionally consistent across the larger ecosystem.
DeFi Liquidity Recedes as Capital Becomes Selective
DeFi total value locked declined $2.595 billion (2.96%) from $87.74B to $85.14B. This outflow occurred while overall market cap fell 1.21%, meaning DeFi exposure contracted faster than the broader market. The differential suggests capital rotation toward store-of-value narratives (Bitcoin) or centralized venues rather than yield-generating smart contracts.
