Legislative Deadlock on CLARITY Act Intensifies
The long-awaited Crypto CLARITY Act faces a critical juncture as the Senate approaches its August recess. Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis has publicly criticized Democrats for stalling the bill, stating it could have passed months earlier. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has joined the pressure campaign, urging an immediate Senate vote and invoking Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto's vision to frame the legislation as aligned with principles of financial independence.
Senator Chuck Schumer has proposed new legislation to establish an agency addressing corruption concerns, specifically referencing President Trump's disclosed crypto earnings and family business ties to foreign governments. This ethics-focused countermeasure reflects Democratic concerns about potential conflicts of interest within the administration regarding digital asset policy.
Support for the CLARITY Act has expanded beyond crypto advocates to include law enforcement groups—the Major Cities Chiefs Association recently backed the bill, adding institutional pressure before the recess. However, JPMorgan has warned that deteriorating prospects for passage remove a key catalyst for digital asset markets, even as tokenization and institutional adoption continue advancing independently.
